I think what's danced at The Cantina is a simplified adaptation of this "official" version, because the way the kick-ball-changes at the beginning of the dance travel to the right is unusual and distinctive. It may have come to The Cantina by way of The Dusty Armadillo in Rootstown, OH.
Since it's impossible to find step sheets or videos for this variation on the dance, here's a short clip to give a flavor for how it's performed, annotated with a step sheet:
Red High Heels
Beginner Line Dance: 20-count, 4 Wall
Choreographer: Unknown
Song: Lookin' for a Good Time by Lady Antebellum (122 bpm)
Red High Heels by Kellie Pickler (118 bpm)
Kerosene by Miranda Lambert (128 bpm)
1&2 Kick-ball-change, traveling to the right
3&4 Kick-ball-change, traveling to the right
5&6 Turn 90 degrees left
7&8 Step-behind-step
9&10 Turn Right 360 degrees
11&12 Left shuffle
13&14 Right foot forward, hold count
15&16 Turn Right 180 degrees
17&18 Left shuffle
19&20 Walk right-left

Hi,
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how time flies by.We are the choreogra[hers of the line dance mentioned and if one wants do a variation of the dance, that's okay. It's been over three years since we choreographed the dance.Maybe that one specific song can change a dance. We're glad that the dance is being done.If you people want us to add this version just ask....maybe who ever started to a variation was taught the right version and just adlib. That can happen...It makes us feel quite warm and good that a part of our original dance with variations being done...have a great day and for those who dance...Happy Dancing !!!
I'll bet that's what happened. I know this variation is danced in Ohio and was brought to Maryland in its current form to the original music. Someone out there probably learned your dance and then modified it as they tried to remember it.
ReplyDeleteSince then the DJ's at the Cantina have also added songs with faster, more aggressive tempos like Miranda Lambert's Kerosene. But I guess that's how dance evolves! Your version looks fun too.
Hi Again,
ReplyDeleteThanks for responding to my comments so quickly. However, a dance evolves is like any other dance. We know that once a song gets into our head the wheels start to turn. We're glad like we said before that someone is doing our dances. It's a very warm feeling inside a person. To think that a dance from a non-professional such as us would travel all around the world and come back to someone who has choreographed it.We were just looking around yesterday through the internet and found what we did.We just want people to have fun and enjoy dancing and we think we've proven it...Have a great day and we did subscribed to your youtube website...have a great day !!!
It must feel great to see your creation go viral and show up around the world.
ReplyDeleteI'm having a hard time keeping up with this blog and my YouTube page, but you've reminded me that I have a video of a twist on another dance, so I'll try to find time to post it.
Hi again,
ReplyDeleteI has sent a message out to you before and somehow it wasn't posted. We're asking the country line dance community about letting us put this version of Red High Heels as our variation. We have also checked the internet and haven't found this version either. Before we pst it as a variation of ours...well that's just the way we do things meaning ourselves. It's a twist on our version by why should we put it with our choreographies. We will let you know how this will turn out to be...thanks from the choreographers you spoke of...have a great night.
If you call it a variant on your dance I certainly won't argue, though I honestly don't know how it came to be. I only tried to document the dance as I've seen it performed locally in case people were trying to learn it.
ReplyDeleteIf this isn't enough to make you feel comfortable, I can only suggest that you contact the Dusty Armadillo to see if someone there is laying claim to it.
P.S.: You could caveat it by saying it "might be" a variation on your dance.
ReplyDeleteHi again,
ReplyDeleteWe have contacted both spots youhave stated on your blog.We know that we can possibly call it a variant. We have also contacted and see what might come out through Carol Craven's World Dance newsletter. As stated,it does feel a kind of warmth that our dance has come full circle and more.We have added this video to our website stating the same thing. This may help you as well to get more exposure to your rambling blog.We hope you don't mind.We don't get anything but a warm glow and we could caveat from it as well.Have a great day and take care.
